Wedding photographer Susannah Blatchford shoots moments and stories in a fusion of photojournalism and creative captures, great for those who like a bit of direction as well as letting things unfold naturally.

With experience comes an understanding of what will most likely happen, but it’s capturing the unexpected amongst the expected which makes shooting weddings so exciting.

When it comes to planning your wedding, its so important to surround yourself with likeminded vendors to ensure your day runs smoothly and is a true reflection of yourself & your partner.

We’ve reached out to a few of our industry friends to curate a series of Vendor Spotlight blogs to assist those in the throws of planning their wedding.

Here, we address priorities, popular styles, budgets and how to achieve the best outcome from the professionals themselves.

If you are struggling with where to start with the planning of your big day then get your notepad out, because some hot tips are coming your way….

We spoke to Susie to get some inside tips for those planning their special day

What advice can you give couples when planning their wedding run sheet when it comes to photography?

Try not to fill up your schedule down to the last minute. Instead, add an extra 10-15 minutes here and there, because, from experience, things will always take longer than expected. Instead of spending your day chasing your timeline, give yourself some time to relax, hang out with your guests or have some time alone together. It can also give your photographer a few more moments to capture some details, and the general vibe of your day.

How much time should couples allow for each element on the day? ie. getting ready photos, family photos, sunset photos etc

This all dependant on which parts of your day are most important to you. I often find you can end up having hours of bridal preparation and then the rest of your timeline is jammed into a few hours after the ceremony.

There are so many ways to structure your day, and every photographer works differently, so ALWAYS have a chat with them about your plans and ideas before setting your ceremony time. This can alter how your whole day is run. Also don’t forget to allow pockets of time for the best light, locations, and travel to and from places. Your photographer should be able to guide you through all of this.

What is your favourite time of year and time of day to photograph weddings?

Every season is stunning for its own reasons but I can never go past those warm, summertime tones. Sunset or blue hour which is just after the sun has gone down is generally always super dreamy!

Any other tips and tricks you'd like couples to know when starting to look at photographers for their big day?

Try and find someone's work that truly speaks to you. Whether that’s their relaxed posing, documentary capture, editorial style, or just the overall aesthetic of their work.

Look a little deeper than a curated Instagram. See how they capture a full day with all of the beautiful, wedding madness that goes along with it.

I highly recommend catching up or having a chat with your photographer before booking. You literally hang out with us ALL day so its great to see if its a good fit.
